First impressions count

There’s an old saying, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”.

Whether it’s a high-powered business meeting or quoting for a building job, you’re meeting new people face-to-face and making instant opinions about them. And they’re doing the same with you.

People make judgements about each other within the first minute they meet and first impressions can easily become lasting impressions. So it’s important to understand how you come across to others and what you can do to make a great first impression.

The right business cards can make a real difference. Choose a card style that’s appropriate for your business, industry and personal style. If you’re a funeral director, for example, you don’t want to hand out bright, funky cards.

Things to think about are the design, colour, weight and finish. Then there’s the content you need to include. Don’t forget all the essentials – name, title, company name, address, phone numbers, email, website and social media URLs – and think about using the back for some extra information. People tend to hold onto business cards so think of them as a mini brochure. You could include a list of your products or services, a catchy strapline or a customer’s comment about your business.
